How to make an animated travel map for YouTube

Make the animated route map that travel YouTubers use in their vlogs: a line that draws from city to city, with stops, transport icons and smooth camera moves.

Updated

Quick answer

In MapAnimate, click your stops on the map (or import a GPX), set each leg's transport, add signs for the places you visited, choose a follow or glide camera and export a 16:9 MP4 at 1080p or 4K. Drop it into Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut or CapCut as a normal clip.

Step by step

  1. Open the editor and click on the map to place your first stop, then each following stop.
  2. Choose a transport for each leg: car, train, ferry, plane and more.
  3. Add signs at the places you visited: pins, tags, passport stamps or photo prints.
  4. Pick a map style that matches your channel, such as Midnight for a cinematic look.
  5. Set the camera (Follow, Glide, Fixed or Overview) and the video length.
  6. Export a 16:9 MP4 at 1080p, 1440p or 4K and place it on your editing timeline.

Why travel channels use animated maps

A 10-second map animation tells viewers where they are, how far you went and how you got there, faster than any voice-over. It also makes a natural chapter break between countries or days.

Settings that work for YouTube

  • Format: 16:9 landscape.
  • Resolution: match your timeline. 4K if you edit in 4K, otherwise 1080p is faster to render.
  • Frame rate: match your footage (24, 30 or 60 fps).
  • Length: 6–15 seconds per map clip feels right. Use pauses at important stops instead of slowing the whole line.

Make each leg readable

Give each transport its own line: a dashed great-circle arc for flights, a solid line for trains and a dotted line on foot. In MapAnimate each transport starts with its own colour and line style, and you can change both per leg.

Camera moves that feel cinematic

Glide moves from a start shot to an end shot while the line draws, for example from a close view of your departure city out to the whole country. Follow stays with the marker and zooms out automatically on long flights so the view never jumps.

Free, without a watermark

MapAnimate is free with no watermark, so you can use the videos in monetised and commercial videos. Please keep the map data credit (OpenStreetMap) that's drawn small in the corner.
